Momento
The film “Memento” is classed as a psychological thriller and throughout the movie we see that it truly lives up to this. The opening titles are very unconventional as the blue over the black not striking to the eye, neither dramatic. However the non diagetic sound playing is very conventional as it is very dramatic.
The convention of the movie is mystery. The sound slowly builds as the first clip is played of a photo with blood in which gives the impression of a physiological thriller. The movie is played in non linear way making it very confusing and dramatic therefore captivating the audience.
The blood in the first scene signifies violence however we do not see the whole attack happen so viewers are left on the edge, wanting to know what happens next, this typical sign of a characteristic of a thriller.
A sense of confusion is carried throughout the whole film, with senses of mystery, along with mild scenes of violence with the connoting with blood, fights and weaponry. The non diagetic sound in the movie also is very conventional as the building up and slow beating noises that we hear to add to dramatic tension within the thriller.
The main character fits into the conventions of the movie as he is also very confused and trying to puzzle together what’s happening. The unconventional dual narrative in the movie also makes the movie very odd as it is showing two halves to the movie
